Southeastern Idaho Public Health and Safe Kids Southeastern Idaho will no longer be providing child safety seats or education to families in the health district. This program has been turned over to the Pocatello Police Department. The remaining seats are available at the following locations:

Thank you to everyone in the health district who helped make the child safety seat program a success. Working together, we provided many seats to many grateful families and caregivers in our area.

SAFEKIDS Southeastern Idaho is part of a national organization, SafeKids Worldwide, dedicated to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury. Unintentional childhood injuries are the leading cause of death for child 14 and under. SAFEKIDS Southeastern Idaho provides information to parents and children on many safety issues including bicycle safety and helmet use, home safety, scald and burn prevention, poison safety and prevention, and drowning and water safety. SAFEKIDS also provides classes on properly using and installing child safety seat and provides in Child Safety Seat checks.

Injury Facts

• Accidental injury is the leading cause of death for U.S. children from one to 14 years old. In 2002, 5,305 children died from accidental injuries.
• The leading causes of death from accidental injury were motor vehicle occupant injury, airway obstruction, drowning, pedestrian injury and burns.
• In 2002, injuries to children ages 14 and under resulted in 233,000 hospitalizations, more than 2.3 million visits to hospital outpatient departments and 17 million visits to physician's offices.
• Injuries are the second leading cause of hospitalization and the leading cause of emergency room visits among children under 14.
• The annual cost of child injury deaths in United States is an estimated $34.5 billion (U.S. Dollars).
