Arthritis is an umbrella term that encompasses more than 120 diseases and conditions that affect joints, surrounding tissue and/or other connective tissues.

Southeastern Idaho Public Health Idaho Arthritis Program

In July of 2004, the Southeastern Idaho Public Health (SIPH) initiated an arthritis program in southeast Idaho to assist in improving the quality of life for people who are affected by arthritis.

Goals

• To increase knowledge and awareness of arthritis.
• To increase awareness of the importance of early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and self-management strategies among people with arthritis.
• To increase physical activity among people with arthritis.

Facts

• Nearly 70 million Americans have arthritis.
• Approximately 236,000, or 1 in 4 Idaho adults, have arthritis.
• Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 years and older.
• 2001 national data showed that women had higher rates of arthritis than men.
• Arthritis and rheumatic diseases cost Idahoans $362 million per year ($215 million in direct medical costs, plus $147 million in indirect costs such as lost productivity).
